What is high potential and gifted education?
High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
At Blackett Public School, HPGE lives in everyday practice. Many students have high potential, and we help that potential to grow into something powerful.
- Teachers identify students' learning needs in the classroom and use evidence-informed teaching practices to challenge and extend students. We provide learning pathways, including enrichment and extension programs and acceleration.
- Our supportive classroom environments promote a sense of belonging and encourage risk-taking, creativity and collaboration.
- Groups are flexible, students take lead roles, and feedback is strengths-based with clear goals and self-assessment.
- Our teachers engage in professional learning to support the diverse needs of all students, including our high potential and gifted learners
Every student is individual, so opportunities are flexible and diverse. Our staff regularly engage in professional development to ensure the most current research-based practices are being used.
- Students deepen strengths through public speaking competitions, critical thinking activities and STEM and coding pathways like coding clubs.
- Talent is celebrated through school musicals and showcases such as the Bidwill Festival, Education Week, visual arts, choir, cultural and First Nations dance group, supported by student roles in tech and crew.
- Leadership grows through SRC, Student Voice, mentoring and peer coaching, and wellbeing is made visible with PAX Good Behaviour Game, our on-site wellbeing officer and School Support dog, Hush.
- Daily life invites curiosity and belonging, with Open Library at recess and lunch and craft club in the library.
- Sport matters too, with PSSA sport, training, coaching and house competitions that include differentiated Physical Education, as well as organised sports activities during recess and lunch run by our House Captains and SLSOs.
Our students participate in a wide range of statewide programs to extend and enrich student potential. Statewide and NSW Department of Education support is available for high potential and gifted students, and we help with entries.
- Our Enrichment Partnerships with Western Sydney University deepen our students’ intellectual curiosity while developing innovation and collaboration.
- The Representative School Sport Pathway and PSSA and NSW Primary Schools Sports Association (NSWPSSA) events enable our students to trial and compete in sports at regional, state and national levels, fostering discipline, commitment and collaboration.
- Our mentoring programs connect our students with trusted adults to build confidence, motivation, and interpersonal skills.
Sporting Opportunities: We are incredibly proud of Te-Reinga, who represented our school with strength and determination at the NSW State Athletics Championship. Competing in both discus and shot put, she showcased not only her athletic skill but also her commitment and resilience.
Her outstanding efforts earned her 5th place in shot put and an amazing 2nd place in discus, an exceptional achievement at a state level!
Later this year, Te-Reinga will be competing in the National Athletics Championship held at the Australian Institute of Sports in Canberra.
Te-Reinga is a shining example of hard work, courage, and school pride. We celebrate her success and the inspiration she brings to our school community.
Cultural and First Nations dance group: Our multicultural, Pasifika, and First Nations dance group is a proud reflection of the rich cultural diversity within our school community. Throughout the school year, students have the opportunity to perform both in school and at external events, showcasing cultural stories, traditions, and values through dance.
Under the guidance and leadership of dedicated teachers, the group not only strengthens students’ confidence and cultural identity, but also promotes respect, unity and pride within and beyond our school.
Their performances serve as a reminder of the importance of cultural celebration, community connection and the shared responsibility we hold in honouring the histories and traditions of all cultures.
