Positive behaviour for learning

Blackett Pubilc School is a Positive Behaviour for Learning school.

At Blackett Public School we believe that PBL (Positive Behaviour for Learning) is a school wide behaviour initiative. PBL employs a whole school systems approach to address problem behaviour and reduce its effects on student's outcomes and on the school community as a whole. PBL encourages positive behaviours from all students, which has been shown to improve their self-concept and motivation to learn.

The PBL system has been adpated from the Positive Behaviour Interventions and Support (PBIS) program developed in the USA. The Regional Director of WSR and the Regional Leadership Team, though impressed by the PBIS model, recognised that its focus on behaviour support needed to include overt emphasis on learning in order to appeal to WSR schools. This regard for learning builds on the NSW Department of Education's Quality Teaching Framework (2003).

PBL operates as a systemic umbrella for a broad range of programs in schools including a value on education, anti-bullying and learning support teams. The elements of PBL can be applied across all years of school and all curriculum areas. This process employs coaches that provide a localised connection between the school and the Region. Coaches are essential in the PBL process to increase transfer of learning in the areas of needs, assessments, evaluation, system development and action planning.

Blackett introduced PBL into its school wide learning systems in 2009. Our core school values are for all students to be Safe, Respectful, Learners. These core values are taught in all school settings by all staff at all times. Our PBL school mascot is called Bluey and he is a bunyip.
